Push to Fire Interview: Sound of Seasons
by Emma Dean

Sound of Seasons

Emma Dean sat down with Sydney’s Sound of Seasons bassist Jayson Robertson to talk their latest tour, recording a new album and rising Aussie talent.

First off, give us a bit of background about you guys - when did you form, who does what?
We're a band from Sydney, we've been playing together for about a year now and have released 2 singles and toured the country a couple of times. Now we are getting ready to record our debut EP which is coming together very nicely!

Marcus sings, Dom plays guitar, James plays drums and Jayson plays bass.

For someone who hasn’t heard your music, how would you describe it and what song would you play for them?
A unique style of rock, which we draw influence from a whole bunch of different genres. I wouldn’t know what song to play for them!

You were touring relentlessly for the last half of 2011, hitting a mix of city and country towns up and down the east coast on the Road Rats and Maniacs Tour – how did it go? Any amusing tour stories?
It was awesome, all the bands involved gelled together really well and the shows were fun! Too many stories to tell and a few that are a bit hard to remember haha.

You’ve played with some awesome acts already (Sienna Skies, Built on Secrets, These Kids Wear Crowns & Closure in Moscow) - what other acts would you like to tour/collaborate with?
To play with any of our favourite bands would be awesome! Maybe even a festival with a whole load of international/local bands ;)

Best and worst parts about touring? When are you back on the road again?
Best parts, easily spending every day with your best mates playing shows and seeing the country. Worst parts, driving and having dirty clothes haha. We will definitely be back on the road in a couple of months!

You boys have been working hard since your inception in 2010 and have risen quite quickly in the indie scene. Have you noticed your songwriting style has evolved since the release of your first single ‘All Over Me’?
We are still trying to find our sound, and that’s the good thing about being in this band. All of our songs are unique in their own way and don't sound anything at all like the last one. But at the same time when you listen to our songs, you know it's us.

What other bands were you a part of before forming Sound of Seasons? How have these impacted on your sound now?
James, Jayson and Dom were apart of Bleached Academy, and Marcus from Stand for the Fallen, we've all been in a number of bands before these but these are the ones we came from to form Sound Of Seasons. I wouldn't say they've had much influence on our sound.

Your debut EP is due for release shortly - what can you tell us about it? When will it be ready?
We are pre proing demos as we speak and should be heading into the studio early/mid this year! The songs are coming together rather nicely and we are just experimenting with a lot of different styles and blending them together to make what will become our EP.

Who are your biggest influences and how does it show through your music and writing styles?
We listen to a lot of different styles of music; some of our favourite bands are Pendulum, Bloc Party and Family Force 5. But we do love bands like Anberlin, Pierce The Veil and There for Tomorrow. I guess we get influenced by whatever we are into at the time.

What are your thoughts on the current pop/alternative rock scene? What are some good up and coming bands we should keep an eye out for?
There's a lot of great new bands that are really, really talented and are starting to create a breath of fresh air in the Australian music scene, which is a nice thing to hear after hardcore has dominated the Australian music scene the past few years. No disrespect to that genre, we all love it and have friends who play in hardcore bands, but it's refreshing to hear something different and new, and actually going to shows to see how these bands pull off what they do.

A few of our favourite up and coming locals would have to be Built On Secrets, We Rob Banks and Awaken I Am.

What CD is on repeat in the tour van?
Definitely Simple Plans whole discography haha.

How would you convince our readers to come to one of your shows? Or buy your EP when it comes out?
If you want to see and hear something new, different and unique, come see our shows. Marcus has some amazing dance moves that you do not want to miss!

Finally, what do you hope 2012 will bring?
It's going to bring you an awesome EP from us. That's for sure!
