How do you feel about your new album Godfather In Black? I didn't hear too much in the way of publicity?
What? It's was everywhere man! *laughs* It's a different approach for us, I mean it's more thrash - I love thrash, I fuckin' love it. There was some publicity but I will not make money out of this, we will not make money out of this. We will never become rich, you know. We paid a lot to come up here; with the price of the van, the food, petrol, coming back again- it cost £300 and got £100 back. So I lost £200 today, but it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because I want to play; we don't really do that many shows anymore, and the cost is too much to go on tour, but one show you know can be like an entire tour. I love it!
Coming up here and hanging out with everyone at Deathfest, how does it make you feel?
It's fucking awesome. I mean it's a chance to meet more people *points at my esteemed colleague Joe Richards* I haven't seen him for 3 years for fuck's sake! And seeing him (Colin Bentham from Infestation) another drummer, for the first time with Infestation - it was incredible man. I think it's worth it doing festivals because you meet friends, you make new friends and you have the chance to expose more of your stuff to more people, but again, it's not because I want to sell but because I just want to play my music. Maybe 50% of the people did like the idea maybe another 50% didn't like it. I don't really care, I try to enjoy it. Head-banging, the guys getting drunk, and we're all here for metal- and that's what it's all about.
Which band's did you like and which bands didn't you like here today at Deathfest?
I'd prefer to talk about the bands I liked. Those I liked were Infestation, Amputated... *everyone sitting with us piles in with words like "brilliant"* ...the vocals were, er, interesting. Cannibal Corpse can sing really low but this guy kicked the shit out of Corpsegrinder. And Wormrot, man those kids from Singapore kicked ass too! They were like: *makes noise like a cross between a pneumatic drill and a psychotic humming bird* I thought they'd come from Australia, you know. Like the Tasmanian Devil, going: *makes noise again* Fuckin' hell!
What's the best/worst thing that's ever happened at a festival to you?
Ok, I can't really name them. But we didn't have anything to drink and when we asked for some water they came back with all of the half empty bottles that they'd got from some other people. We put them down on the floor and the distance in between was...bigger than the stage. But that's been the only funny moment really, to be honest with you we enjoyed it just the same.
And it's that connection with people you meet and everything that makes you want to do it?
Yeah, I have a great time. You know, I always wanted to jump in a crowd and play guitar - I did it tonight for the first time. You get fans in front of you and people were really respectful- they didn't really mosh that much because I was playing. But honestly; if they'd thrown me on the floor and broken my guitar I wouldn't give a fuck. I'd be like "Hell Yeah! This is great!" I want to head-bang. I want to mosh too, man!
